A1 Indoors 2024
On 3rd February 2024, A1 Sports Club organized an indoor tournament in the Erlenmatt Hall in Basel. Eight teams participated, which were divided into two groups: Group A and Group B. Group A consisted of A1 Sports Club, Sports Club Roche, Zurich Mavericks, and Zurich United Cricket Club, while Group B had Novartis Cricket Club, Basel Afghan Cricket Club, CricAlps, and Cricket Verein Zug (CVZ).
Each team played a round-robin of three matches in their group, and the top two teams from each group qualified for the semi-finals. In Group A, Zurich Mavericks and Sports Club Roche took the first and second spots, respectively, while CVZ and Basel Afghans took the first and second spots in Group B.
The tournament had some notable moments, such as when a Javed Miandad moment helped Zurich Mavericks qualify for the semi-finals by scoring a huge six when they needed five runs in their last ball. It was a heartbreaking moment for the host team, A1 Sports Club.
In another match, Basel Afghans defended a modest total of 40 runs against Zurich Mavericks. Suliman Popal took three wickets in the fourth over and brought them well back in the game when Zurich Mavericks were cruising along. Their captain, Malyar Stanikzai, had to defend five runs in their last over and a wicket to bundle Zurich Mavericks. He was steaming in with two dot balls and two runs needed in two balls. A well-directed throw resulted in an overthrow that went to the boundary, ending Basel Afghans' dream of reaching the finals.
Cricket Verein Zug (CVZ) emerged as the tournament's champions, thanks to their clinical batting, bowling, and fielding. They were outstanding in all spheres of the game, and it was no surprise that both the best bowler and best batsman awards went to the CVZ team.
Their star batsman, Ankush Hasani, was outstanding with all his reverse scoop shots to score the granted two runs at the back. He ended up scoring more than 100 runs in the tournament with an average of 35 and a strike rate of 128.05. Their star bowler, Akhil Paul, with raw pace and accurate line and length, seemed deadly for most of the batsmen in the tournament. He took nine wickets with an economy rate of 2.88.
Thanks to every club who participated in the tournament to make it a successful one. Ultimately, cricket was the ultimate winner of the A1 Indoor Cricket Tournament 2024.
